The Global Languages Initiative (GLI)
How many languages do you speak? Do you consider yourself a "global citizen"?
The
Global Languages Initiative is an ambitious project spearheaded by the Council on Language Instruction (CLI) with many partners across the university, including a student advisory board. This campus-wide effort aims at promoting multilingual and intercultural skills across all disciplines. To compete, lead, and serve in a rapidly changing and interconnected world such knowledge is not a luxury, but a necessity for all of our students. Throughout the year, the GLI is hosting or co-hosting a number of events, organized around the theme of Immigration in the Fall, of Language in Winter and of Identity in Spring.
The GLI has a fun and beautiful website that's well worth a visit. It includes many articles and resources about the benefits of language study and multilingualism. Conveniently located on the same site, you will find resources related to study abroad and traveling the world as well as local resources to explore multiculturalism on Northwestern's doorstep and to learn and act about immigrant issues.
As mentioned above, the GLI has put together an exciting array of events to communicate its message. As a fun little incentive, students in all language departments received a GLI passport to be stamped when they attend a GLI event or an event organized by their own language department. Prizes will be given by the Department of French and Italian each quarter for the two students who attend the most events organized by the Department of French and Italian and by the GLI, while at the end of the year the GLI will have prizes for the students who attend the most GLI prizes throughout the year. Make sure you get your passport stamped or signed when you attend GLI and French and Italian department events! At the end of the quarter, you may come by the FIT office (Kresge 2-375) to have your events counted by either Elizabeth Steelman and Sarah Cartwright Monday 26th November between 1-4 pm and Thursday 29th November between 12-3:30 pm.
La Table Française
You are warmly invited to join us for lunch, while also practicing your French language skills, meeting other French speakers, and getting to know your fellow students and professors in a casual setting. Every Monday at 12:00 p.m. in the ISRC dining hall at 1835 Hinman.
