Study Abroad
The department offers graduate students several opportunities for study abroad. A special travel grant enables students to spend the summer of their first or second year in France or another Francophone country. Students need to submit a research proposal to qualify for this grant.
The department also offers students various opportunities for spending their fourth year (in whole or part) in France. The Northwestern Paris Program in Critical Theory, as well as exchange programs with the Ecole Normale Supérieure, rue d'Ulm and the ENS Lyon enable students to conduct research in France. An informal agreement with the Centre d'études féminines and the department of French Literature at Paris VIII, and another between Northwestern and the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHSS), allow outstanding students to work with a joint dissertation committee towards a double doctorate . Competitive Dissertation Year Fellowships granted by the Graduate School may also support the student's study in Paris.
