Rita Filanti

Born and resident in Bari, Italy, she holds a Laurea in Lingue e Letterature Straniere (English and Spanish) and a Laurea in Lettere Moderne from the University of Bari. In 1996 she received a postgraduate degree in Theory and Practice of Literary Translation from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” with a thesis project on Eduardo De Filippo’s translation of Shakespeare’s “Tempest” into Neapolitan dialect, and translations of Canadian novelist Mavis Gallant into Italian.  She holds a number of qualifications in the field of foreign language teaching. In 1998 she received a position as Italian Lecturer by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was posted to Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. for three years. As part of the same Government program, she moved to Chicago in 2002 posted to Northwestern University, where she worked till 2005. Prof. Filanti will be teaching Italian language and culture courses at Northwestern in the Winter and Spring quarters of 2008 in a program funded jointly by the Italian Cultural Institute, Chicago, and WCAS.
